Being a licensed professional in the beauty field for close to two decades I can safely say i’ve serviced over 100k individuals. Ranging from little boys, to women, down to Men from all walks of life. I’ve learned so much over the years as an educator with more than a decades experience in the field of educating future professionals . I am still to this day studying trichology and loving it. However, when servicing the public you will find yourself running into someone who may not have had the same training on how one should upkeep thier appearance.
As a tradesmen my job is to educate the public on the basic principles of grooming. Focusing on your hair, skin, and nails I decided to add hair and skin care routines to my services while advising a visit to a good nail tech. You can walk into any barbershop and find most barbers will only cut your hair and most of them don’t care the last time you actually cleaned your scalp.
There is nothing wrong with focusing on just cutting hair but my goal is to take a sophisticated approach on men’s grooming. Helping a new group with understanding that there’s nothing wrong with taking extra steps to better your appearance. Giving a new understanding on Washing and conditioning the hair and body, taking care of the skin, making sure the nails are proper, last but not least choosing a great fragrance! Welcome to sophisticated grooming and i hope you enjoy your visit. Everyone deserves to be groomed because clean never goes out of style.
Wash on the regular
The hair & body is exposed to the natural elements as we go about our day. Dust, dirt, & debris (also known as contaminants) are so small we don’t acknowledge their presence. Cleansing the scalp from those contaminants will ensure the proper hair growth. Leaving the scalp pliable and free of all dirts & debris. Shampoo and conditioner should be a weekly occurrence for best results shampoo weekly and condition 2x/wk.
Finding products with no paraben no sulftes to prevent buildup. When wsahing the hair and body always remember to rinse on lukewarm/coolest temp. Oral health starts at the bathroom but ends in the dentist. Your job is to not just brush daily but floss as well. Find a nice ebrush that rotates in circular movements and a water pik to get in between those teeth. You only get one set so you might as well take care of them.
Along with cleanliness there should be a fresh odor that you adorn. Deodorant is the bare minimum one should wear to ensure we don’t posess body odor as we go throughout our day. Hwever, fragrances are a great way to build a collection of smells.MY FAV fragrance at the moment would have to be Dior homme and polo club back. Those two are my absolute favorite but i own more fragrances as time went by. Keep in mind that you will want to have cleaned your body with soap and rinsed in cool water before applying smells.
Taking care of the largest organ
Unbroken skin is the first line of defense against harmful microbes that can invade the body.
Broken skin is most succeptible to infections. the best way to keep the skin in good conditiom is to make sure it stays hydrated, cleansed, and moisturized. Finding information on proper skin maintenance may be hard for some. You don’t know where to start or what to even look for. The person you see to take care of your grooming sessions need to help you find the best routine to keep your scalp and skin in good condition.
The best way to know if the skin is properly moisturized and hydrated is by pinchng the skin at the knucle of your ring finger. If the skin goes back to its normal state quickly then you are well hydrated. If it so happens that your skin stay elevated a little longer then you maybe a little dry. Increase your water intake and washing your face with lukewarm and soap with a cool rinse will keep the skin from drying out. Towel blot and moisturize right away to lock in the moisture. In the morning cleanse with a refreshing soap while the evening a renewal works well.
Having clear skin speaks volumes to your maintenance routine having clean manicured nails is a whole nother subject.
Get under the nails
Hand hygielne used to be an overlooked subject in the playbooks of yesterdays male. The modernd male is beginning to understand the importance of getting a regular manicure to keep up the apperance of the nails on the hands and feet. Keepeing the nails clean, trimmed, and shaped exhibits levels of self care that can be admired.
To those that stand/walk all day in profession will benefit having certain servies such as manicures and pedicures. Pedicures have been known to increase circulation and gives the feet its necessary attention to function at a great level. Do you work in food service, construction, medicine? These services are carved out just for you. Find your nearest nail technician and tell them sophisticated grooming sent you. Thank me later!
What’s that fragrance you’re wearing?
To top off any great look you will want some sort of scent to bring it all together. Picking a scent other than B.O (body odor) can be a more pleasant choice at any time as well. I mean how nice would it be to be in an elevator with some one who’s arm pits have a life of their own? I know it will only be a short ride but who wants to suffer for even a second. When choosing your smell of the day you will most likely be lead by your mood.
You can find fragrant experts out there will recommend certain smells with a particulr fabric that you may be wearing. Havig said that I will say this. My prefrence and reccomendation will always by an eu de parfum over eu da toillete. I feel like the parfum lasts just a littler longer during the day. If it so happens I am in posession of a toillete i am coupling that with a petroleum based moisturizer to help it linger just a little longer.
Choosing a iighter scent during the summer and a heavier fragrance in the winter will present you as a treat for that person who may want to get close to you.
To sum it all up
There is a man brewing underneath everyone of us that wants to add a little extra to his grooming routine. Whether its taking better care of his skin, wearing a cleaner hand, or adding a scent to his profile. Don’t hesitate to come out of your shell becoming a different individual. It doesn;t have to be a sudden drastic change. Start with a fragrance here or there and as you begin to feel different from the confidence a great smell can give you graduate to a cleaner trimmed nail or a skin care routine.
Taking a sophisticated approach to men’s grooming will place your level of confidence in a stratosphere that you will find oh so pleasing. Until next time

There’s nothing wrong with taking a sophisticated approach to your grooming routine.
Great article! I’m impressed by your extensive experience in the beauty field, and it’s fantastic that you’re advocating for a sophisticated approach to men’s grooming. I have a couple of questions:
As you’re studying trichology, could you share some key tips for maintaining healthy hair and scalp, especially for men with specific hair types or concerns?
When it comes to fragrances, do you have any recommendations for men who are new to exploring scents? How can they find the right fragrance that matches their personality and style?
First let me say Thank you for leaving a comment! Those are some great questions you’ve asked.
when maintaining a healthy hair and scalp it’s important to consider what’s being consumed. Diet, medications, and activity all play a huge role in hair health. Using the proper products on a routine designed for you is important.
Stay away from 2 n 1 products as they don’t do what they’re designed to do. A good clarifying detox is recommended for those on meds, use products, and swim regularly. A hydrating or moisturizing product is recommended for those with dry brittle hair.
Conditioning is just as important as shampooing. I urge people to condition 2x a week while only washing no more than 2 times per week depending on the level of oil production. Too much washing can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause damage to the cuticle.
There is nothing wrong with a cocktail of shampoos. Lathering first with a clarifying can always be followed up with a hydrating shampoo if needed.
When it comes to fragrance and making a match it can be tough. I like to tell my customers to try out fragrances that are soft and don’t linger. Strong notes are usually best worn by the outgoing individual while the softer cleaner smells are reserved for those that are laid back.
It’s best to sample all fragrances before buying. I hope this helps for now as I will work a few articles on hair maintenance and fragrance selection.
Thanks again,
Geoff
I love this article about men’s grooming and the fact that you consider yourself a tradesperson. I wonder what you think about people who feel that the use of shampoos (which equals chemicals) is harmful and choose not to wash their hair very often. This is a good piece that lots of men should read. I’m going to pass this info on to my husband.
I hope your husband find this material useful in his daily grooming routines. I am one that would agree with those who cite shampoos being harmful in usage. This makes it quite important to read labels and ensure you are staying away from parabens and sulfates. Eliminating cleansing altogether can be quite dangerous as you are inviting scalp conditions to appear than can lead to hair loss and pretty gross smells.
